Chelsea head coach faced the media ahead of tomorrow’s game and here is what he had to say

Chelsea women made the Champions League final, you could too, have you spoken to her yet?

Not yet, we were totally focused on our game against Madrid, then Fulham and now against Madrid.

But of course we followed it on TV, and it’s a big achievement.

So we are very happy because in the end it’s one club and it’s a big thing to arrive in the final, the first time for the Chelsea Women, and hopefully they can finish the job.

So big, big congratulations from us.

You must have big confidence and belief after the first leg in Spain?

The best thing is that they really feel it, and they did it during the first-half. I think we all together felt we could be stronger in the second-half.

We rested some players, and now we have three days in between, so the challenge will be to keep the intensity going throughout the whole match.

It is important, it’s a semi-final, the pressure’s on, it’s a knockout game.

It’s the second leg, the decisive one, so to arrive with a certain level of belief and self-confidence is absolutely necessary. Otherwise we have no chance against a team like Real Madrid. It does not help so much if your coach is talking about it, we need to really feel it.

If I talk about it it’s only because I’m sure they feel it, and we can see it in the games, that the team is self-aware and able to produce performances, then they are also aware of the challenge ahead of us.

It’s the best feeling to arrive with an almost full squad, in good shape, with a good performance and an okay result in the first-leg.

So everything is open now for the second leg.

I’m very happy that we could beat Fulham in between so we have nothing to worry about, nothing to regret. Now’s the moment today to enjoy training and be ready tomorrow.

Christian Pulisic in fine form and has taken the number ten shirt from Eden Hazard…

Absolutely it’s a good thing, this decision to take this number, it sets the tone and it shows the determination, and the dreams that C wants to fulfil and his own demands to himself.

This is a very good part of his decision, the downside of this decision is that people will always compare you with any number 10 in the world, and with the number 10s at a big club like Chelsea.

So this is the downside and you have to live up to that.

But right now he is in a good place and he has huge impact to our team.

So everything is good and we can be very happy tomorrow if he continues to make his mark.

Injury update and the latest team news?

Mateo [Kovacic] will not be in the squad.

I think that Toni [Rudiger] will play with a mask, because he trained yesterday in a mask.

Everybody else is in training today, so hopefully we will have no new injuries today and that means everybody is available except for Mateo Kovacic.

Will it be more open with Madrid chasing the game:

I’m not sure if they will play again in a 5-3-2 or they will switch to their more familiar 4-3-3. That maybe depends on last tests for Mendy and Ramos today.

And from this decision things change, of course, by nature, because any formation has its strengths and weaknesses.

So in the end in a semi-final in the CL it’s not about the formation, it’s not about what Real Madrid play, it’s about how we play, what intensity we have, what belief we have, are we brave enough, do we play courageous enough and do we play at our top level within the formation.

So it’s always a tactical choice, but in these big games it’s more about individual tactical behaviour than within groups and combinations.

Can we maybe isolate Real Madrid in a two-against-one, three-against-two situation, how do we solve these situations and can we avoid being isolated ourselves in these small situations?

So it’s more about how we play than what we play, the same for Real Madrid. Because we don’t quite know how Real Madrid will play, we will fully focus on ourselves.

Big selection call on Timo Werner with a lack of goals since you arrived?

Yeah but I believe strongly that Timo wants himself to score absolutely this goal. He knows that he had a huge one in Madrid.

But I think we all have to accept that sometimes strikers misses chances, big chances, and this is part of the game. Not all the decisions are made yet, we have another training session right now.

It’s always about the last impression from the players, do they feel confident, do they show up today, are they strong in finishing today.

Don’t forget, to talk about the game and to split the game between defence and attack is a nice thing to do, but you can get easily lost if you want to cut football into separate pieces because it’s a very complex game and a very complex sport.

So for me Timo like everybody else who plays up front has a huge intensity against the ball and has a huge part in that we are so strong defensively, because it’s a team effort, how we defend and how we attack.

So everybody needs to step up and take responsibility for scoring and for defending, we have enough I think we create enough chances, enough touches in the box to maybe score more goals.

This will come maybe with time, a bit more experience and adapting, and self confidence.

I’m pretty relaxed about it, and trust my players no matter who starts tomorrow, and like I said we do this as a team.

Nobody has to do this on their own, we do this together and there are many situations to solve tomorrow, not just thinking about scoring. We will try to create chances, to create good intensity, and from there we trust our guys.

Sergio Ramos back for Real, what difference will that make and what’s the main lesson from the first leg?

The main lesson is that we can trust ourselves and the main lesson is that we have every right to be in the semi-final. We should be self-confident and have no fear to face this challenge.

Does Ramos play or not? This is a tough question, because I simply don’t know it. Does it change a lot for Real Madrid? Yes, he’s their captain.

So it changes a lot but we cannot lose our heads about this decision. I think that he will start, we will prepare for that, and we have to make sure that he cannot do it alone.

Have you opened any talks about contract extensions?

No. There is no time and there is no need.

What did you take from the first leg, bringing it to the second game?

For me, the challenge is to forget the result. The challenge is always over two games, you play the first game and then you start at 0-0 again.

I don’t know any other way to prepare a match than to encourage my tram to go out and try to win it and best your best. If we are at our best then it is a no-brainer that we go for a win, we want to win games. This club is about winning, this game is about winning, this competition is about winning.

This is a semi final. There is zero importance in the preparation for a match, zero, it is nothing about how we start tomorrow or prepare today. That is zero influence in the talk that we give to our players.

We will encourage them, demand from them and we will be strong there tomorrow at 8pm as one group, as one club and a big goal to overcome Real Madrid. This ill only happen if we bring our best level to the pitch and the best level means to fight to win.

N’Golo Kante – what will a Champions League medal be for his career? Elevate it even higher?

Where to elevate to?

He is the guy you need to win trophies, that is why I am so, so happy that he is here. I have dreamed about this player, fighting for this player at any club I was coaching at and now he is my player.

He has won many trophies except for the Champions League. I am sure he will be doing everything to get this trophy. For me he is an example, an unbelievable input for any team in the world, He is key, he will be key tomorrow.

He can be hard to read – is he hard for you to read?

Still he needs to accept that will cuddle him, I do this a lot.

He is a nice guy, almost a shy person. He is quiet, he likes his own quality time and he is not loud. I see him smile a lot, I see him interact with everybody but on his own terms, very shy and polite but I am so happy that players like him exist.

It is a pleasure to watch. What he is doing with his mentality, a real helper, always gives everything to help anybody on the pitch as such a nice, humble and quiet guy.

Champions League was a holy grail before 2012, have you felt the club’s mythology with it?

I never felt like this competition was our holy grail since I arrived. When I came to the club, I knew this was a competitive club, a club about winning, the atmosphere has a huge impact around here at Cobham.

It does something to you, you instantly feel it but more in the way that we are very competitive and serious about any competition, any game and this is what I like a lot.

I never felt that the holy grail was winning the Champions League. I have a strong feeling that everything counts, the club demands it of this team and me as a coach that we win any game, no matter who is on the other side of the pitch. We arrive at games, no matter the competition, ready to win and this is what shapes us, this is what I feel is our big strength.

We arrive as a team tomorrow as a team used to this pressure, used to this amount of belief and determination to win games. This is good pressure. The key values are the performance in any game. We know ourselves we have a good opportunity, we deserve to be in the semi final and we can be very sure we will give everything to get through to the final.

Tempted to make changes tomorrow or the same starting eleven?

Is Zinedine Zidane in your office right now?

I would like to help you with your question but I will not give any hint, I will wait until tomorrow and make my decisions very late like I usually do.

I have my ideas in my mind but I have been too long in the business to know that anything can happen in the last training sessions and I can change my mind.

O need another sleep and tomorrow I will decide on the lineup. I will give it to my team first this is the way it is. I want to be sure we play a good match with the lineup we have, a strong performance.

Relaxed rules about staying in hotels before home games, still the same for tomorrow?

Good question.

We decide more or less game to game and at the moment I feel that today we will have afternoon training as we have a late match tomorrow, the players will sleep at home and then go to the hotel tomorrow.

So we will meet for lunch and that gives us another seven hours together in the hotel which is enough time for me to have meetings, several hours of rest. Say somebody had a late night or doesn’t sleep well, we will still have a lot of time to recover.

Once we have this in a season of 60 matches, sleeping so much away from home in hotels we try to reduce the time. Everything has an influence, now we have had three days in between [games] so we have had time to recover, take our time at Cobham, use the physios , massages.

Sometimes if you have only two days between we go to the hotel m and then the players have the endings to get treatment.I will let them go home, be distracted and we meet tomorrow for a walk, lunch and meetings then still have several hours to prepare.
